1949 Middle East tour
(From Norma Cameron)

The Butlins Summer Season was followed in 1949 by a tour of the Middle East - Egypt, Malta, and Tripoli. The band was under canvas in Fayid, and Joan Marriott and I shared a tent, complete with a Batman who looked after the two of us. Quite an experience.

Joan and I were invited by two officers who were in charge of an East African battalion way out in the desert, for a curry lunch. We travelled there by Jeep and I remember it seemed to take forever to get to the camp and it was just like driving into a furnace, the wind was so very hot. That was the most magnificent curry we ever tasted--we lost count of the number of condiments down the center of the table!
